SLC Best Practices and Strategies
Academies - Sub-groups
within schools, organized around particular themes and/or grade levels. May
include career and/or content oriented academies.
House plans - Students
are divided into groups, either across grade levels or by grade levels. Students
take some or all courses with their house members and from their house teachers.
School-within-a-school
- Small, autonomous programs housed within a larger school building.
Generally responsible to the district rather than the host school.
Magnet schools
- Use a specialty core focus (such as math, science, creative arts, or a
career theme or cluster).
Freshmen transition activities
– Multiple possibilities include mentoring from older students or placing
students in their own school-within-a-school.
Multi-year groups
- Teachers stay with a group of students over a period of two or more
years, foster trust and intimacy between students and teachers. Similar to
looping.
Alternative master scheduling
- Length of the class period, the school day, and the school year can be
changed to support academic achievement.
Adult advocate systems
- Ensures that at least one adult knows each student well. May include
trained community volunteers.
Teacher advisory systems
– Similar to adult advocate systems. Teachers periodically meet with
students, providing guidance on careers, effective study skills and any number
of activities geared to improve the student’s schooling experience.
Academic teaming
– Teachers are organized across departments, so that they share the same
students rather than the same subject.
