Lexington, KY — Big news for students and educators. The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC) has been awarded $12.1 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education to expand Lenses on Literature, an innovative English Language Arts program designed to help students become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers.
Awarded through the Education Innovation and Research (EIR) Expansion Grant, the funding supports a five-year, multi-state effort to bring high-quality literacy instruction to more classrooms, with a strong focus on rural schools and schools serving high-needs students.
KEDC will lead the project alongside Carnegie Learning, Impact Florida, the Maine Department of Education, and WestEd, working across Florida, Kentucky, and Maine to reach 120 schools, 300 teachers, and nearly 10,000 students.
Why It Matters
Lenses on Literature is built to engage students, spark curiosity, and build confidence. The program encourages students to read meaningful, grade-level texts, think deeply about what they read, and express their ideas clearly through writing and discussion.
This grant allows KEDC and its partners to expand the program, measure its impact, and share what works, helping schools strengthen literacy instruction and improve student outcomes for years to come.
Simple and powerful goal:
More engaged readers, more confident writers, and stronger results for students.
