KEDC CEO Nancy Hutchinson Advocates for Kentucky Educational Development Corporation School Districts During Visit from U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon
Georgetown, Ky. — The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC) joined education leaders from across the Commonwealth today as U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited a Georgetown-area school as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s “History Rocks!” Tour, a nationwide initiative celebrating America’s approaching Semi quincentennial (250th anniversary) in 2026.
KEDC Member and superintendent, Billy Parker, asked KEDC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Hutchinson to attend the event. She was there to advocate for the 81 Kentucky school districts that she represents and reinforce the importance of strong support systems for students, educators, and communities across the state. Hutchinson emphasized that as national education priorities shift, including increased efforts to return more decision-making authority to states — Kentucky must continue receiving a fair share of funding and resources to support students and schools statewide.
“This tour highlights an important priority, helping students understand our nation’s story and the founding ideals that shaped it,” said Hutchinson. “As education policy continues shifting back to the states, it’s essential that Kentucky maintains a fair piece of the pie when it comes to funding, programs, and support services that directly impact students and classrooms. Our Kentucky school districts are doing innovative work every day to engage students and strengthen civic learning, and we’re proud to advocate for the resources and partnerships that help them succeed.”
Secretary McMahon’s visit was part of the U.S. Department of Education’s History Rocks! “Trail to Independence” Tour, a nationwide initiative highlighting innovative ways schools are engaging students in American history and civics education. The visit included remarks from Secretary McMahon focused on civic learning, educational games and student activities centered on U.S. and Kentucky history, and opportunities for engagement with students and educators.
As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026, Secretary McMahon, Administration officials, and education leaders will visit schools across the country on the History Rocks! Tour to spotlight local approaches to teaching U.S. history, celebrate each state’s contributions to the Union, and encourage students to connect with America’s founding ideals.
KEDC continues to support our 81 Kentucky school districts through leadership development, professional learning, student success initiatives, workforce innovation, district services, and partnerships designed for long-term impact.
